Between 1989 and 1993, the Center organised three international meetings with the participation of personalities of international calibre. These three events received wide attention and were considered insightful reflections for the advancement of the Peace Process.

In 1989, soon after its establishment, the Center organized a meeting titled: “Perspectives for Peace in the Middle East”, which was attended by about sixty personalities from the Middle East, the United States, the Soviet Union and Europe. This conference brought together, for the first time, important PLO representatives and members of the Israeli Parliament. The event was supported formally and financially by the European Commission and by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In May 1991, soon after the Gulf War, the Center held the second conference under the title: “Israelis and Palestinians: When Women Talk about Peace", which focused on the role of women in promoting human relationships and on the means by which it is possible to overcome the barriers of hate. More than thirty Palestinian and Israeli women attended the event. The Conference was organised together with the Region of Lombardy and the Municipality and Province of Milan.

In 1993, about fifty participants (from the Middle East, Europe, the United States and the Soviet Union) took part in the third conference: “Israelis and Palestinians: Walking toward Peace”. This conference was considered as an important step in the Peace Process negotiations leading to the Oslo Agreement (signed in Washington on September 13th that same year). This meeting was organised together with the Region of Lombardy and both the Municipality and the Province of Milan and received the formal and financial support of the European Commission and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Since the Oslo Agreement, the Center has been conducting a new line of para-diplomatic interventions in support to the Peace Process. The Center thus organizes a series of 'Track II' Seminars (so-called "private seminars' due to their discrete nature) in order to allow a closer exchange of opinions and ideas between Israeli and Palestinian leaders and opinion shapers, as well as the elaboration of new useful information concerning the negotiations themselves.

Perspectives of the Peace in the Middle East. Milan, 1989

In November 1989, the Center organized an important International Conference, with the attendance of about sixty Israeli, Palestinian and international leaders. Among them were: Abba Eban, Shulamit Aloni, Lova Eliav (Israelis), Yasser Abed Rabbo, Feisal El-Husseini, Hanan Ashrawi (Palestinians), Tachim Bachir (Egypt), Richard Murphy (USA), Karen Brutens (Soviet Union), André Azulei e Théo Klein (France),Gerald Kaufman (United Kingdom), Rita Levi Montalcini, Giorgio Napoletano, Margherita Boniver, Luigi Granelli, Virginio Rognoni (Italy).
The meeting was organized in collaboration with the Region of Lombardy and with both the Municipality and the Province of Milan, and was supported formally and financially by the European Commission and by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This Conference saw important PLO representatives and members of Israeli Parliament coming together for the first time and consequently received great attention from both the Italian and the foreign media. It is important to remember that at that time Israeli law did not allow Israeli representatives to meet official PLO delegations and so this conference was groundbreaking indeed.
During the meeting, the Israelis and Palestinians could openly and frankly talk about the most crucial matters, from terrorism to Jerusalem.
A number of months later, the Palestinian delegation to the Washington talks would be formed mainly of the same Palestinians who had participated in this Conference held in Milan.
The final Press Release, with Yasser Abed Rabbo, Shulamit Aloni and Lova Eliav, had a great impact on Israeli media, too.
Direct relationships built between Israeli and Palestinian representatives had great impact as well - they would play an important role in the next steps of the Peace Process.

Israelis and Palestinians: When Women Talk about Peace, 1991

Thirty women - both Palestinian and Israeli - took part in this conference. Among them were Shulamit Aloni and Naomi Hazan from Israel and Vera Noufl and Salwa Moustapha from Palestine. The meeting included also some Italian representatives, such as Piero Fassino and Virginio Rognoni.
The event was implemented during a very difficult period and was one of the first joint Israeli-Palestinian events in the world to be organized soon after the Gulf War. It is important to remember that, contrary to the position of most Arab states, at the beginning of the Gulf War the Palestinian leadership supported Iraq. The Gulf War thus caused a great tension with the Israeli Peace Movements, as when during the war Iraqi missiles had hit Israel - Palestinians had welcomed them.
In this context, a frank but also difficult debate was held during the meeting. Shulamit Aloni played a crucial role in the reaching of positive results; a final statement of common commitment for peace and against violence was signed.

Israelis and Palestinians: Walking toward Peace, 1993

This Conference was held in June 1993, with the attendance of about fifty personalities from Israel, Palestine and from all over the world.
The Israeli delegation was led by then Knesset members Hagai Meron and Yossi Katz, who met for the first time official representatives of PLO. The Palestinian delegation’s leaders were Yasser Abed Rabbo and Ziad Abu Zyyad.
It was the first Conference organized after the major crisis created when hundreds of Palestinians, alleged to be members of the outlawed Hamas Islamic Resistance Movement, had been expelled from Israel to southern Lebanon. Therefore, preparing the meeting was very difficult.
The frank debate developed during the meeting on the idea of “Gaza First”, with a parallel recognition between the PLO and Israel, was very important. Its results were fed into the Oslo and Washington negotiations that were ongoing at the time.
Private talks among the delegations leaders were effective. During them, Rabbo asked the Israeli Labour representatives to work for an Israeli recognition of the PLO (the Israeli law forbidding talks with PLO representatives has been annulled at the end of 1992, however Israel still did not recognize the PLO).
Once in Israel, Meron and Katz submitted a motion in the Labour Parliamentary Group seeking the recognition of PLO; the motion was accepted. Meron gave a speech in the Knesset which had considerable impact, in which he mentioned by name each Labour Minister who in personal discussions with him was in favour of the recognition, and who together constituted the majority in the government.
